Changing Web settings
You can change default Web settings to help you manage Web services.
This section tells you how to
|
|
|
|
Changing the number of Web connections |
|
|
|
|
|
Up to 150 users can simultaneously visit your Web site. To improve
Web & File Server performance, you can allow fewer simultaneous
Web connections. (The maximum number includes administrators using
AppleShare IP Remote Admin.)
Note: If you are hosting multiple Web sites, the maximum of 150 applies
to all sites combined.
To change the number of concurrent Web connections, follow these
steps:
1 |
Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin. |
2 |
Click the Web server button.

|
3 |
In the Server Settings list, click Web Service. |
4 |
Enter a new number in the Maximum Client Connections box. |
5 |
Click the Save button. |
|
Your changes take effect after you stop and start the Web & File
Server. You should do this when you're sure no one is using it.
You'll need to go to the server to start the Web & File Server
again. |

Enabling and disabling Web logging |
|
|
|
|
|
By default, Web logging is turned off. When Web logging is turned
on, the server captures information about visits to your Web site.
The log files are stored in the HTTP Log Files folder in the AppleShare
IP Preferences folder, which is inside the Preferences folder
in the System Folder. If you are hosting multiple Web sites, information
for all sites is stored in the same file.
For more information about the HTTP logs, see Monitoring Web Server activity.
If your Web site has a lot of visitors, the log files can take
up a large amount of disk space. You should remove old log files
regularly.
Note: Web logging may decrease the performance of your AppleShare IP
servers.
To turn Web logging on or off, follow these steps:
1 |
Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin. |
2 |
Click the Web server button.

|
3 |
In the Server Settings list, click Web service. |
4 |
To turn on Web logging, select the Enable Web Log checkbox. |
|
To turn off Web logging, deselect the Enable Web Log checkbox. |
5 |
Click the Save button. |
|
|
|
|
Enabling and disabling directory listing |
|
|
|
|
|
By default, directory listing is on when Web service is on. A
directory listing shows a clickable listing of the contents of
the folder (if the user has the appropriate access privileges).
A directory listing only appears (instead of a home page) if the
Web folder the URL matches does not contain a file with the Default
Document Name specified on the Server Settings page.
If directory listing is turned off and there is no file with the
Default Document Name inside a Web site's folder, the user will
receive an error message in his or her browser.
Note: The directory listing setting you choose applies to all Web sites
on your server.
To turn directory listing on or off, follow these steps:
1 |
Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin. |
2 |
Click the Web server button.

|
3 |
In the Server Settings list, click Web Service. |
4 |
To turn on Web directory listing, select the Enable Directory
Listing checkbox. |
|
To turn off Web directory listing, deselect the Enable Directory
Listing checkbox. |
5 |
Click the Save button. |

|
Changing your Web folder or home page |
|
|
|
|
|
When you install AppleShare IP, a file named Default.html is installed
in a folder named Web Folder at the root of the server's startup
disk. By default, the Default.html file is your home page and
the Web Folder is your default Web folder.
|
If you are hosting a single Web site on your server, follow these
steps to change the default Web folder if you want the Web server
to look for your Web site files and Web Plug-ins, Error Files,
and Remote Admin folders in a different folder. You can also designate
a different file as your home page. |
|
If you are hosting multiple Web sites on your server, the Web
Server looks in the Multi Domain Settings file for the location
of your Web site folders. Your default Web folder only needs to
contain the Web Plug-ins and Error Files folders. The Remote Admin
folder must reside in the folder defined in the first entry in
the Multi Domain Settings file. You can follow these steps to
change the location of the default Web folder and the folders
it contains, or to designate a different file name for your sites'
home pages. (The name of the home page for every Web site on your
server must be the same.) |
To specify another Web folder or display another file as your
home page, follow these steps:
1 |
Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin. |
2 |
Click the Web server button.

|
3 |
In the Server Settings list, click Web Service. |
4 |
To change the default Web folder, enter a new path. Folder names
should be separated by colons. For example: |
|
<hard disk name>: <new Web folder name>
or
<hard disk name>: <folder name>: <new Web folder name> |
5 |
To specify a new home page, enter the name of the file. |
|
The file must be located in the default Web folder and must contain
HTML code. |
6 |
Click the Save button. |
7 |
Go to the server computer and drag the contents of your previous
default Web folder to your new default Web folder. |
|
Your changes take effect after you stop and start the Web & File
Server. You should stop the server when you're sure no one is
using it. You'll need to go to the server to start the Web & File
Server again. For instructions, see Starting and stopping the server and disconnecting users. |
|
For information about protecting the current Web folder from unauthorized
modification, see Controlling access to your Web site. |

Editing Web error messages |
|
 |
|
|
|
You can change the text in Web error messages (for example, "404:
File not found") that appear on a client's computer.
Note: The error messages apply to all Web sites on your server.
The default error files are located in the Error Files folder,
inside the Web folder listed on the Web & File Server Settings
page. You can edit these files using any HTML editing tool, but
be sure not to change the format of the file names. The files
must contain HTML code, and must be named as follows: "xxx.html,"
where the "xxx" is the error number.
Following are the eight error files and messages:
|
400 Bad Syntax: The request appears to be improperly formatted.

a timely response. It is unlikely that the requested object is
a CGI. |
