Accessing your Web site

Users access your Web site by typing the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of your Web Server into the Web browser application.

You can control access to your Web site by turning Web service and guest access on and off, and by changing the access privileges assigned to the Web site's folder or the folders it contains. You can also control access by using TCP Filter software. For more information on TCP Filter, go to your server and see AppleShare IP Help.

This section tells you how to

      Enable and disable Web services
Allow or deny access to registered users and guests
    Visit your Web site
    Determine your server's URL

Enabling or disabling Web services

By default, Web service and guest access are turned on. You can turn Web service on or off to allow or deny users access to your Web site. You can also turn guest access on or off. The Web service and guest access settings you define apply to all Web sites on your server.

If you haven't changed the default Web settings since you installed AppleShare IP, then users logging on to the Web Server will see the default home page (named Default.html) in the folder named Web Folder on your server's startup disk. (To change these defaults, see Changing your Web folder or home page.)

To turn Web services on or off, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the Web server button.

3 Click the Server Settings button.
4 In the Server Settings list, click Web service.
5 To turn Web service on, select the Enable Web Service box. To turn off Web service, deselect the box.
IMPORTANT: If you disable Web service, you will no longer be able to use AppleShare IP Remote Admin, and any users connected to your Web site will be disconnected immediately.
When Web service is turned on, the current Web Folder is available to registered users visiting your Web site.
6 To turn on guest access to Web services, select the "Enable Guest Log On" checkbox. To turn off guest access, deselect the box.
When guest access is on, anyone on your network or the Internet (if you are connected to it) can use a Web browser to log on to the Web & File Server without supplying a name or password and view your Web site.
If you turn on guest access, make sure that you've assigned an access privilege other than None to the Everyone category for your Web Folder. See Setting access privileges.
    7 Click the Save button.

Visiting your Web site

To visit your Web site, users type the Web & File Server's URL into a Web browser program. The URL consists of the Web & File Server's DNS name or IP address, preceded by the "http://" tag. When the URL is entered into a browser program, your home page appears.

To visit the Web site, follow these steps:
1 On any client computer, open a Web browser program.
2 In the address field of your browser program, type your server's Uniform Resource Locator (URL) as follows:
    http://name
Replace "name" with the DNS name for your computer, as shown in the Network section of the Status page. Or you can enter your server's IP address.
If you have set up multiple Web sites on your server, go to your server computer and see "Setting up multiple Web sites" in AppleShare IP Help to determine the URLs.
3 If guest access for Web service is off, enter your name and password in the dialog box that appears.
Your Web site's home page appears.
