Adjusting Web & File performance

If usage is heavy on the Web & File Server, you may want to adjust performance settings.

This section tells you how to

      Allocate processing power
Give more processing power to Web & File services
Reduce the number of concurrent connections
Improve service to those connected for file sharing and FTP service by lowering concurrent connections
Setting a maximum amout of memory to the Web & File Server
    Reserve memory for other applications
    Change Web service performance settings
Turn off Web logging or reduce concurrent Web connections

IMPORTANT: Web & File Server performance depends on a number of factors: the amount of RAM, the type of network, and the computer's processor type, as well as the number of connected users and the type of work they do. If the software adjustments in this section are not adequate, you may want to consider adding RAM to the server, purchasing more powerful server equipment, or changing to a faster network type.

Allocating processing power

You can adjust the maximum processing power the computer gives to the Web & File Server and thereby increase or decrease the processing power given to other AppleShare IP servers or other programs.

To adjust processing power, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the File server button.

3 Click the File Activity button.
4 Type a new percentage (10-100) in the Maximum User Activity text box.
The maximum user activity affects the performance of all Web & File services–FTP, Web, AppleShare file sharing, and Windows file sharing.
Increasing the percentage gives the Web & File Server more processing time, thus increasing its performance (though possibly reducing the performance of other programs).
Decreasing the percentage frees more of the computer's processing power for other applications.
    5 Click the Save button.

Reducing concurrent connections

You can improve Web & File Server performance by allowing fewer users to work with file sharing services at the same time. You can also limit the number of guests who can simultaneously log on.

IMPORTANT: The concurrent connections limit described in this section affects the number of users who can connect to the Web & File Server to use AppleShare file sharing, Windows file sharing, and FTP. It does not affect the number of concurrent Web connections. To control Web connections, see Changing the number of Web connections.

To limit the number of concurrent file sharing and FTP connections, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the File server button.

3 Click the Server Settings button.
4 In the Server Settings list, click General.
5 In the "Maximum File Server and FTP Client Connections" box, type the number of concurrent connections you want to allow.
6 In the Maximum Guests Connections box, type the number of concurrent guest connections you want to allow.
7 Click the Save button at the bottom of the window.
Your changes take effect the next time you stop and start the Web & File Server. You should start and stop the server when you're sure no one is using it. For instructions, see Starting and stopping the server and disconnecting users.

Setting a maximum amount of memory to the Web & File Server

When you install or upgrade AppleShare IP, you can limit the extent to which the Web & File Server cache can expand by setting a maximum amount of memory for the use of the Web & File Server. This ensures that there is enough memory to run other programs such as other AppleShare IP servers, the Web & File Admin application, CGI programs that your Web site may use, or backup utilities.

To limit the size of the Web & File Server cache, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
2 Click the File server button.
3 Click the Server Settings button.
4 In the Server Settings list, click Cache.
To set the maximum amount of memory for the Web & File Server, click the arrows next to the box labeled "Maximum Web & File Server memory."
The default amount of memory is 4096K less than the total available memory for your computer. You cannot increase the number beyond this amount.
    5 Click Save.

Changing Web service settings

Some Web service settings, such as Web logging, can reduce Web & File Server performance. If Web service is configured for the maximum number of concurrent Web connections, Web & File Server performance may decrease when the number of users trying to connect exceeds the maximum.

If you are using the Web & File Server to provide Web service and you'd like to increase file sharing performance, you may want to change these Web service settings.

For instructions, see Enabling and disabling Web logging or Changing the number of Web connections.
