Allowing and denying guest access

You can turn on guest access to allow anyone on your network to use file sharing or FTP services or visit your Web site. Most administrators turn on guest access when they want to share non-sensitive information easily.

Note: If you followed the optional instructions in AppleShare IP Help to share users and groups information, you cannot use Remote Admin to modify guest access on secondary servers.

If you turn off guest access, only registered users can log on to the Web & File Server or visit your Web site.

Note: Guest access does not apply to mail or print services.

To allow or deny guest access, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the Users button.

3 Click the Guest user in the Users list.
4 Select the checkbox next to each service you want to allow guests to use.
When guest access for a service is enabled, users can connect to the Web & File Server and use the services without entering a name or password.
To deny guest access, make sure the checkbox is not selected.
Note: Turning off guest access does not affect guest users who are currently logged on to the Web & File Server for file sharing service. If you want to disconnect those users, see Disconnecting users.
5 If you want to turn on program linking for guests, select the Enable Program Linking checkbox.
WARNING: If you enable program linking for guests, they will be able to communicate with applications running on the Web & File Server, and they may gain access to sensitive data.
    6 Click Save.

Note: For guests (or any other user) to have access to any Web & File services, the service has to be enabled and access privileges specified for shared items. For instructions on enabling services, see Web service, AppleShare file sharing service, Windows file sharing service, and FTP service. For instructions on setting access privileges for share points, see Setting access privileges.
