Web & File troubleshooting–Windows file sharing

This section helps you address problems with using the AppleShare IP Web & File Server to provide Windows file sharing services

A user's password isn't working.

If your Windows users are having trouble logging on to the AppleShare IP Web & File Server, make sure they are using a password.
You can also enable guest access. See Providing guest access.

Users can't see the Web & File Server in the Network Neighborhood.

Users' computers need to be properly configured for TCP/IP and have the appropriate Windows networking software installed.
If users' computers are in a different subnet from the Web & File Server, you need to set up a primary domain controller (PDC) server on your network so that users can browse across subnets. You also need to have a WINS server on your network or LMHOSTS files on each of your Windows clients.

Note: If Windows computers are properly configured for networking and connected to the network, they can connect to the Web & File Server even if they cannot see the server icon in the Network Neighborhood window. See Connecting to the Web & File Server without using the Network Neighborhood.
