Changing mail protocol settings

A mail protocol is a standard set of rules for sending or receiving mail over a network. The AppleShare IP Mail Server supports SMTP, POP, and IMAP.

You can turn support for specific mail protocols on and off. You can also change each protocol's default port and response name.

To edit the protocols supported by the Mail Server, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the Mail server button.

3 Click the Server Settings button.
    4 Click Advanced Server Options.
    5 Click Protocols.
6 Select the checkbox next to each protocol that you want to enable.
When a protocol is enabled, your Mail Server can send mail to and receive mail from e-mail applications that use the protocol.
For descriptions of the mail protocols, see Single-server mail service.
7 To change the protocol's response name, type a new domain name in the Response Name text box next to the protocol.
This name is sent to the contacting server when a network operation using that protocol takes place. Changing this name can sometimes help limit unsolicited mail ("spam").
8 Enter the port number over which you'd like the protocol to communicate.
SMTP has both an In and Out port because it is the only protocol that can connect to a server to deliver and receive mail.
    9 Click the Save button.
