Web & File troubleshooting-FTP services

Users say their attempts to connect for FTP service are refused.

Verify that FTP is turned on in the Web & File Server Settings page. See Enabling and disabling FTP services.
The maximum number of connections may have been reached. You can check the maximum number of file server and FTP connections in the Web & File Server Settings page.
Verify that the user's computer is configured correctly for TCP in the user's TCP/IP control panel. If there doesn't appear to be a problem with the TCP/IP settings, use a "pinging" utility that allows you to check network connections.
Check whether there is a DNS problem by specifying the IP address of the Web & File Server instead of its DNS name. If the connection works with the IP address, there may be a problem with the DNS server.
Verify that the user is entering the correct DNS name for the Web & File Server, listed in the Network Info section of the Status page.
Verify that the user is specifying the correct user name or Internet alias (on the User page in the Users & Groups List) and typing the correct password. Verify that the password does not contain special characters.
Verify that the user is specifying the correct name of a shared volume and that the name does not contain spaces or special characters.
Make sure the user has the appropriate access privileges to the shared volume. On the Web & File Server, check the Privileges page for the shared volume. See Setting access privileges.

Users say that they cannot log on to the Web & File Server anonymously.

Verify that anonymous FTP is enabled on the Guest User page. See Enabling and disabling FTP services.
The maximum number of connections may have been reached. You can check the maximum number of connections in the Web & File Server Settings page.
On the Web & File Server, check the Privileges page for share points and enclosed folders and make sure that the Everyone category for the shared item has Read Only or Read & Write privileges. See Setting access privileges.

An FTP user cannot find a file or folder.

Verify that the user has Read access privileges for the volume and for each folder in the path to the file. See Setting access privileges.

FTP users have access to your personal files.

Keep personal files in a separate folder. On the server, in the Privileges page for the folder, make sure you are the owner of the folder, and set User/Group and Everyone privileges to None. Make certain that no one but you has the "Enable user to administer the server" privilege (on the User page).

A user has forgotten his or her password.

Users are disconnected unexpectedly.

Verify that the users were not disconnected intentionally by an administrator.
Verify that the computer running the Web & File Server software is working.
In the TCP/IP control panel on the user's computer and on the computer that is running the Web & File Server, verify that TCP/IP is active.
Verify the network connection of each user's computer.

Additional troubleshooting help on this topic is available on the server in AppleShare IP Help.

A user's password doesn't work.

If a user cannot log on with the usual password, check whether the password has expired (on the user's User page). If it has, assign a new password. See Changing a user's attributes.
Consider setting a higher number in the "Failed attempts before log on disabled" attribute on the File Server Settings Password page.

An alias can't find the original item.

The original item may not be in a shared folder, or the original item may be missing from the server. Share the volume that contains the alias and original item, or recreate the alias.
