Starting and stopping the Print Server

You need to start your AppleShare IP Print Server before users can use any print services. You can start the server manually or have it start up automatically when your server starts up.

You may need to stop and restart the Print Server to cause changes to Print Server settings to take effect. You should only stop the server when users aren't using print services.

This section tells you how to

Manually start or stop the Print Server
Set the Print Server to start up automatically

Manually starting or stopping the Print Server

To start or stop the Print Server, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
2 To start the Print Server, click the Start Print Server button on the Status page. To stop the Print Server, click the Stop Print Server button on the Status page.
When you restart the Print Server, it attempts to attach all the printers it had attached before. If users are printing directly on those printers, the Print Server checks each printer periodically and attaches it when it becomes available.
When you stop the Print Server, it automatically detaches all attached printers from their queues. Jobs that have not yet printed remain in the queue until the Print Server is restarted.
Users cannot send jobs to a queue if the Print Server is not running. If the Print Server is going to be stopped for an extended period of time, notify users before you stop the Print Server.
3 Respond to the message on screen.
If you click Shutdown, any jobs that are being printed will be interrupted and will resume printing from the first page when you start the Print Server again. Any jobs that are being queued will be deleted from the queue.
When the Print Server is stopped, users can still print directly on individual printers listed in the Chooser.
