Print Server overview

The AppleShare IP Print Server manages communication with the printers on your AppleTalk and TCP/IP networks by allowing the server to act as a repository for documents being printed (print jobs), and allowing you to set up print queues to which users can send print jobs.

You can enable or disable queuing (in which the user sends print jobs to the server) and printing (in which the server sends print jobs to the printer) by network type. You can also secure your print queues to control who can print.

To users, using the Print Server is just like printing directly on a printer. They use the Chooser or Desktop Printer Utility to select what appears to be a printer (it is really a print queue), and they print as they normally would. For more information about how the Print Server works, see Providing print service.

What's new in the AppleShare IP 6 Print Server:
If you've upgraded from a previous version of AppleShare, you'll notice that the following Print Server features have changed in AppleShare IP 6:
New queue setting for placing new jobs on hold
AppleShare IP 6 Print Server now allows you to place a print queue's new jobs on hold. This allows the user to release jobs one at a time without putting the queue on hold.
Secure printing queues for Windows clients
AppleShare IP 6 Print Server allows Windows-based LPD clients access to a secure (non-password) print queue. The Print Server reads the control file that contains the user name to determine access to the queue.
    TCP/IP support
AppleShare IP 6 allows printing over TCP/IP, utilizing the LPR/LPD protocol standard, in addition to printing over AppleTalk
    Secure printing
The server now provides a security feature that allows control over who has access to your printers. You can also require users to enter a password-the same password they use to log on to other AppleShare IP services-before printing. The password-protected printing feature requires the 8.6.1 LaserWriter driver or Mac OS 8.6 or later on client computers. (See the Read Me that comes with the LaserWriter driver for installation instructions.)
    An enhanced administrative interface

IMPORTANT: This section assumes you have followed the installation and setup instructions in the "Getting Started" manual or "Upgrading" document that came with your software. If you haven't, you should complete those instructions before attempting to perform the tasks in AppleShare IP Remote Help.
