Mail Server overview

The AppleShare IP Mail Server provides mail service for AppleTalk and TCP/IP-based client mail applications. Users log on to the Mail Server to send and receive mail, and the Mail Server communicates with other mail servers to deliver mail to the appropriate mail server. The Mail Server uses the same Users & Groups Data File as the Web & File Server, so it's easy to maintain user names.

The AppleShare IP Mail Server supports Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), Post Office Protocol (POP), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), as well as a number of other protocols and Internet conventions.

What's new in AppleShare IP 6:
If you've upgraded from AppleShare IP 5, you'll notice that the following Mail Server features have changed in AppleShare IP 6:
      Automatic mail database verification
Support for Realtime Blackhole List (RBL) anti-spam sites
    Remote POP account download support
    Shared Users & Groups support
    IMAP support
    Full standards support
    High-performance message storage
    Enhanced management controls
    Scheduled connections
    Shared folders support

    Automatic mail database verification
The AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server checks and verifies the mail database every time you start up the server. This feature is particularly useful if the mail database has been damaged or has not been closed properly. If the Mail Server detects a problem with the database, the user is notified. You may choose to verify immediately or, if the server is unattended, verification begins automatically after a 30 second delay. The Mail Server verifies the database and prevents any loss of data. However, in some rare cases such as low memory or low disk space, the Mail Server will be unable to complete a mail database verification. You then need to run the AppleShare IP Mail Tool application to recover the mail database.
Support for Realtime Blackhole List (RBL) anti-spam sites
The Mail Server allows you to prevent unwanted mail by checking and blocking a connection. When you enable this option, the Mail Server compares the incoming connection's originating address against an active list on a server maintained by a private company. If the originator is on this list, the connection is refused.
    Remote POP account download support
In addition to ETRN, the AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server allows the administrator to contact remote POP mail servers to retrieve mail. You can periodically log on to a POP inbox by configuring the account, schedule, and network information.
    Shared Users & Groups support
The AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server supports the shared Users & Groups primary and secondary system configurations. This allows the administrator to configure the Mail Server to run on either a primary or a secondary Users & Groups system. You can also configure multiple Mail Servers to run on the primary and the secondary systems to share and distribute mail load. The AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server allows you to specify the mail server that is responsible for storing mail for each user so that multiple mail servers sharing a common Users & Groups file can unambiguously determine the destination mail server for any user in the shared Users & Groups system. The administrator provides the TCP/IP address of the mail server that stores mail for the user.
    IMAP support
AppleShare IP 6 includes full support for the IMAP (version 4) protocol, allowing users to access their mail from anywhere on the Internet. Clients can use a number of industry-standard Internet e-mail programs, including Netscape Communicator, Microsoft Outlook Express, CTM PowerMail, Mulberry, Simeon, Siren, and more.
    Full standards support
In addition to IMAP, AppleShare IP 6 supports POP, SMTP, PASS, Finger, APOP (encrypted passwords), and mail notification, providing a complete e-mail solution with all of the popular Internet protocols supported in one server.
    High-performance message storage
AppleShare IP Mail Server uses a high-performance database, so accounts and messages are not limited by the Mac OS file system. The Mail database stores unique messages only once on the disk, providing improved performance, lower delivery times, and much better disk utilization than traditional file-based message storage systems. A built-in V-Twin-based search engine provides extremely fast text searching across the Mail database on IMAP-based client mail software.
    Enhanced management controls
The AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server adds many new management features for controlling mail delivery, sending, and relaying, including anti-spam control. The improved administration application allows messages to be viewed and controlled by destination. Extensive, configurable logging facilities provide a complete record of server activity.
    Scheduled connections
The AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server now allows connections to any host to be scheduled by the hour, and support for the Internet ETRN standard allows remote servers to be polled for waiting messages.
    Shared folders support
The Mail Server now supports the ability to allow IMAP clients to share mail folders, a feature of some client mail software. This feature allows users to share a folder or entire mailbox, and all of the mail inside, with other users on the same mail server. (See the documentation that came with your client mail application for more information.)

IMPORTANT: This section assumes you have followed the installation and setup instructions in the "Getting Started" manual or "Upgrading" document that came with your software. If you haven't, you should complete those instructions before attempting to perform the tasks in AppleShare IP Remote Help.
