Setting incoming mail restrictions

Setting a maximum incoming message size

You can set a message size limit and specify the maximum size of an incoming message.

To set a message size limit, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
2 If the Mail Server is not running, click the Start Mail Server button in the Status window.
    3

    Click the Mail server button.

4 Click the Server Settings button.
    5 Click Mail In.
6 Select the Message Size checkbox. Then type a number for the maximum message size.
When this box is checked, users cannot send and receive messages larger than the indicated message size. Larger messages are sent back to the sender.
    7 Click the Save button.

Accepting mail from known users only

You can refuse incoming mail from addresses that are not in the local Users & Groups List. You may want to do this if your server is receiving a high volume of unsolicited mail (or "spam"), or to prevent creation of invalid "from" addresses.

For example, if someone sends mail from "[email protected]," and "company.com" is your Mail Server's domain name but "traviswayne" doesn't exist in your Users & Groups List, the Mail Server would reject the message.

An invalid "from" address includes a name that is not in the local Users & Groups List, or a user for whom mail is disabled.

To refuse mail that has an invalid "from" address, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
2 If the Mail Server is not running, click the Start Mail Server button.
    3

    Click the Mail server button.

4 Click the Server Settings button.
    5 Click Mail In.
6 Select the "Require local 'from' addresses to exist in User & Groups" checkbox.
When this feature is not selected, messages with any "from" address can be sent to users on your server.
    7 Click the Save button.

Rejecting mail whose host is not in the Host List

You can reject mail that is sent to or from a host (or "domain") that is not listed in the Host List. The Host List is automatically created by the Mail Server, and it includes each mail server domain that has received or sent mail. You can restrict users to specific hosts if you need greater control over mail activity.

Note: To view the Host List, choose Show Host List from the Mail Admin program's Server menu. See Editing host-specific mail settings.

To reject mail sent from hosts not in the Host List, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
2 If the Mail Server is not running, click the Start Mail Server button in the Status window.
    3

    Click the Mail server button.

4 Click the Server Settings button.
    5 Click Mail In.
6 Select the "Reject mail if host is not in Host List" checkbox.
Mail sent to or from other domains is returned to the sender.
When this box is not selected, the Mail Server accepts mail from and sends mail to any host.
    7 Click the Save button.
If you restricted hosts, incoming mail with invalid domains will be returned to the sender. Recipients can still connect to the Mail Server to retrieve mail stored before the restriction was enabled.
