Apple share home directory support |
|
The AppleShare IP 6 administrator can create home directory folders
that contain folders for each user. After the administrator creates
the home folder and sets access privileges, a folder for a user
is automatically created when the user logs in for the first time
in the AppleShare file sharing services. When the name of the
user is displayed in the volume list in the Chooser, the user
can log on to his or her own folder to save and store information.
Each home directory folder can be viewed and accessed only by
its owner. |
| |
Sherlock indexing of shared folders |
|
The AppleShare IP administrator can create a separate Sherlock
index file for each share point. Only one index can exist for
a share point. Each index has the access privileges associated
with the user/group, owner or Everyone specified by the administrator
in the Web & File Admin program. You can click the Sherlock index
Icon in the Privileges window to start the indexing process. Before
you click the Sherlock icon, you must save any changes (access
privileges) you make. If there is an existing index, the new index
replaces it. |
| |
Simplified cache panel |
|
AppleShare IP 6 Web & File Server allows you to set the maximum
amount of memory available to run the Web & File Server. By setting
a maximum, you make sure that there is enough memory to run other
applications. |
| |
Invisible nonaccessible share points |
|
With AppleShare IP 6 Web & File Server, users can only see those
share points to which they have access in the volume list in the
Chooser. |
| |
Full Mac OS Extended format compatibility |
|
AppleShare IP is fully compatible with Mac OS Extended format
(or HFS Plus) volumes. Both the server and the client now correctly
report how much disk space is available on the server's Mac OS
Extended volumes. |
| |
Increased maximum connections |
|
The maximum number of users that can share files at the same time
is now 500 (or 250 on an AppleTalk network), if allowed by your
license agreement. The maximum number of users that can connect
to a server's Web site at the same time is 150. |
| |
Improved client control |
|
When connecting to a server and mounting a volume, the AppleShare
Client now shows connection status and allows the user to cancel
the connection. |
|
Users can also switch to other applications while waiting for
the client to connect (switching requires Mac OS 8.0 or later);
users can continue to work while waiting to connect to a server
that is unavailable or located across the Internet. |
| |
User account access with administrator password |
|
The main administrator (named as owner of the computer) can use
his or her password with any user name when logging on to a server.
This allows the administrator to see the servers to which the
user has access without knowing the user's password. This feature is not available if the administrator password is
blank or no password (no entries). |
| |
Windows file sharing service |
|
| |
AppleShare IP 6 allows Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT
clients to connect to an AppleShare IP server using the Windows
Network Neighborhood interface. |
| |
AppleShare IP's Windows file sharing service shares the same multithreaded
server architecture and file caching with other Web and file services,
providing high performance for both Macintosh and Windows clients. |
| |
AppleShare IP's support for Windows file sharing works as a standalone
server or integrated into a larger network of Windows NT servers.
Security for Windows clients is fully integrated with all other
AppleShare services, making it easy to set up user accounts, share
points, and access privileges at one time for all clients. |
|
| |
Separate guest access for all services |
|
Guest access (including Anonymous FTP) can be turned on or off
for each service. |
| |
Improved FTP client compatibility |
|
FTP service maps file names to ISO character sets to handle differences
between Mac OS and Windows clients. |
| |
Customizable FTP messages |
|
Users can now easily customize the default FTP messages that appear
when they connect, and log on as registered users or anonymously. |
| |
File Server performance improvements |
|
AppleShare IP 6 enhances File Server performance, particularly
on a 100 Mb network. A new dynamic memory utilization algorithm
allows the server to run faster, with more threads and larger
buffer sizes when AppleShare IP detects that there is sufficient
RAM available on the server. |
| |
Idle disconnect |
|
The new Idle disconnect feature allows the AppleShare IP administrator
to specify how long a user's connection can be idle before the
server automatically disconnects the user. This feature works
with both the AppleShare and Windows file sharing services. |
| |
FTP alias support |
|
FTP service supports aliases to files and folders. To ensure server
security, the target of the alias must be within a shared folder
or volume. Aliases to remote volumes are not supported. |
| |
Sherlock Web plug-in |
|
You can use the Sherlock Web plug-in to search the contents of
a Web folder. To enable this, the administrator uses the Sherlock
application to create an index for the volume on which the Web
folder is located (not for the Web folder itself). To use the
plug-in, enter the URL http://website/.sherlock, where "website"
is the address of your website. The plug-in returns up to a hundred
hits. For more details about this plug-in, see the Sherlock Plugin
Read Me. |
| |
Ability to host multiple Web sites |
|
You can now host up to 50 Web sites on the same server. |
| |
Web Server performance improvements |
|
AppleShare's dynamic file and directory cache provides excellent
Web Server performance. |
| |
HTTP 1.1 support |
|
The Web Server now supports HTTP 1.1 features, including persistent
connections, byte-range requests, and file upload. |
| |
Web Folder and alias support |
|
All Web documents are stored in a central folder that appears
as the root volume to Web browsers. As with all other files and
folders on the server, access to the Web Folder is protected by
its access privileges. Aliases for files and folders are also
supported. To ensure server security, the target of the alias
must be within a share point or in the Web Folder. (Aliases for
remote volumes are not supported.) |
| |
Extensibility through plug-in and CGI support |
|
The AppleShare IP Web Server is easily extensible with WebSTAR
API plug-ins or CGIs. AppleShare IP 6 provides support for WebSTAR
API version 1.2. |
| |
Customizable error files |
|
AppleShare IP allows users to create custom Web error files, allowing
you to provide more information to your Web site visitors in the
event of an access error. |
| |
Improved security |
|
Automatic listing of directories via HTTP can be turned off. |
