Using other techniques to control access

Controlling password use

You can control the length of a user-created password, the number of times someone can enter an incorrect password, and the length of time that a password is valid.

To change password settings, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the File server button.

3 Click the Server Settings button.
4 In the Server Settings list that appears, click Password.
5 To disable a user's account when too many incorrect passwords are entered, select the "Disable logon after X failed attempts" checkbox and enter the number of log-on attempts you want to allow before a user's account is disabled.
This feature applies to all users (including the owner of the computer and users with administrative privileges) of AppleShare Client, FTP, e-mail software, or Web browsers. This feature also applies to password protection for printing if clients have LaserWriter 8.6.1 or later installed.
Do not set the number too low. If you set a low number, someone who has momentarily forgotten a password or who makes a typing error may have his or her account disabled.
6 To control the length of user passwords, select the "Require passwords to have at least X characters" checkbox and type a minimum password length in the text box.
This feature only applies to users who log on via AppleShare Client software and e-mail applications.
IMPORTANT: Setting a minimum password length helps keep passwords secure. A password of 7 or 8 characters is harder for others to guess. (This attribute has no effect on passwords that have already been created.)
Note: Some non-Mac OS users and client mail applications cannot receive the message that a longer password is required. Be sure to tell those users the minimum length for passwords.
7 To require that users change their passwords regularly, select the "Passwords expire after X days" checkbox and type the number of days before users have to change their passwords.
Setting a password expiration date increases security.
Only AppleShare Client users can receive the message that their password has expired and needs to be changed. However, the Mail Server allows users to connect even when their password is expired.
8 To allow AppleShare Client users to automatically connect without being prompted for a password, select the "Users can save password for automatic log on" checkbox.
    9 Click the Save button.

Locking folders or files

You can lock disks, folders, or files to prevent them from being moved, renamed, or deleted while the Web & File Server is running. A user can still copy or open a locked folder or file if he or she has the access privileges to do so.

To lock a disk, folder, or file, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the File server button.

3 Click the Disks & Share Points button.
4 In the Disks & Share Points list that appears, click the disk, folder, or file that you want to lock.
To display an item's contents, click the item.
5 In the window that appears, click Set Privileges.
6 If you've selected a disk or folder, select the "Can't move, rename, or delete this folder" checkbox. (If you've selected a file, skip to step 7.)
Only the owner of a locked folder can move, rename, or delete the folder.
7 If you've selected a file, select the Locked checkbox.
Locked files cannot be renamed, discarded, or changed, even by their owner. They can be opened, duplicated, and copied (unless the Copy Protect option is set), so any Read privileges remain in effect.
Note: This Locked checkbox serves the same purpose as the Locked checkbox that appears in a file's Info window in the Finder.
    8 Click the Save button.

Copy-protecting files

You can prevent any file from being copied while the Web & File Server is running. You cannot copy-protect folders.

WARNING: Copy-protection prevents use of the Finder, the Web, or FTP to copy a file from a computer that is running the Web & File Server to another computer or volume. It does not protect files from other copy programs that bypass this setting.

To copy-protect a file, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the File server button.

3 In the Disks & Share Points lists that appear, click the file that you want to copy-protect.
To display an item's contents, click the item.
4 On the page that appears, click Set Privileges.
5 On the page that appears, select the Copy Protect checkbox.
When this box is checked, the file cannot be copied to a client user's computer.
    6 Click the Save button.

Limiting program use

You can limit the use of application programs that allow more than one user to run the program at the same time.

To limit program use, follow these steps:
1 Log on to AppleShare IP Remote Admin.
    2

    Click the File server button.

3 In the Disks & Share Points lists that appear, click the application program you want to limit.
To display an item's contents, click the item.
4 On the page that appears, click Set Privileges.
5 In the box labeled "Application's concurrent user limit," enter the number of users who may use this program at the same time.
You can use this feature to help you comply with the licensing agreements of shared applications. The maximum number that you can enter is determined by your license agreement. Users who try to run the program when the maximum has been reached see a message to try again later.
Note: If a program cannot be shared by more than one user, the text box may not appear.
    6 Click the Save button.
